Families Should Be Reunited

For more than a year, as the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border has developed into a crisis for families, we’ve insisted that children belong with their parents – not in jail-like detention facilities. A recently-announced regulation would allow children to be held in detention throughout the process of their court hearings, which can in some cases be months or even years. We believe it is an important moment for Christians to act and speak for vulnerable children and families.

CALL CONGRESS : Urge Them to Keep Families Together — and Out of Detention

Members of Congress have oversight over what happens at our borders and they are responsible for appropriating funding. Their job is to represent the views of their constituents. Hello!

My name is {YOUR NAME}. I am your constituent from {CITY, STATE} and ask that you address the highly concerning issue over the treatment of vulnerable families and children arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border to request asylum.

Talking points for your call:

  • Congress should use its oversight and appropriation authority to ensure that the U.S. abides by the terms of the Flores settlement, ensuring that children are held in the least-restrictive appropriate environment – not in jail-like detention facilities.
  • The U.S. should respect asylum laws that allow those facing extreme violence and persecution in their home countries to receive due process as they demonstrate their eligibility for protection under U.S. law
  • New policies that require children and families to either be detained indefinitely pending their court hearings or to wait in Mexico for their hearings are inconsistent with our national commitment to provide due process and safe haven to those fleeing persecution.

Remember to thank them for their time!
